Madurai is one of the longest-living cities in the world and a major city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is called the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu and is located on the Vaigai River. The ancient history of the region is associated with the pandya king, and Madurai was the site of the pandya capital (4th–11th century CE).

The city has a number of historical monuments, with the Meenakshi Temple and Tirumalai Nayak Palace being the most prominent. Madurai is an important industrial and educational hub in south Tamil Nadu. The city is home to various automobile, rubber, chemical, and granite manufacturing industries.

Meenakshi temple

Arulmigu Meenakshi Amman Temple is a historic. The Hindu Temple is located on the southern bank of the Vaigai River. This temple was built by Pandyan Emperor Sadayavarman Kulasekaran (1190 CE–1205 CE).
The Meenakshi Temple Complex is literally a city. one of the largest of its kind in India and undoubtedly one of the oldest too. The temple grew with the contribution of each dynasty and victorious manarchs into an enormous complex extending over an area of 65, 000 sq. m. The temple first came into being 2000 years ago and was substantially expanded during the regime of Thirumalai Nayak (1623–1655 AD).
A striking feature of this temple is the astonishing structure known as "Ayiramkaal Mandapam," or the Hall of Thousand Pillars, and each pillar features high, ornate, bold sculptures that look lifelike. From any angle, these pillars appear to be in a straight line, an architectural masterpiece indeed. In the outermost corridors are situated the matchless musical pillars carved out of stones. When it is tapped, each pillar produces a different musical note.

Thirumalai Nayak Palace

Thirumalai Nayak Palace is a 17th-century palace erected in 1636 AD by King Tirumalai Nayaka, a king of the Madurai Nayaka dynasty, who ruled Madurai from 1623 to 1659.

This palace is a classic fusion of Italian and Rajput styles. The building, which can be seen today, was the main palace in which the king lived. The original palace complex was four times bigger than the present structure. In its heyday, the palace was considered one of the Wonders of the South. This palace is two kilometers south-east of the Meenakshi Amman Temple.

Alagar Temple

Alagar Temple is situated over the beautiful Azhagar Hills, which is 21km away from Madurai. This temple was constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam temples dedicated to Vishnu.

Alagar Temple covers an area of about 2 acres and has a seven-tiered gopuram. A granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing all its shrines.

It is believed that pandyan kings contributed most to the construction of the temple, where the massive tower at the entrance attracts visitors at first sight. Jatavarman Sundara pandyan had beautified the vimana with gold plates during the 13th century. After the pandyan rule, King Thirumalai of the Nayakas dynasty expanded the temple's beauty with many artistic features and kalyan Mandapam.

Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple is a Hindu temple and one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan.
The temple is located 8 kilometers from Madurai. This temple is built with rock-cut architecture dating back to the pandya period of the 6th century and life-sized sculptures in the Mandapas of the Nayaka period during the 16th century. Aasthaana Mandapa with serveral artistically carved pillars leads to the 150 feet high seven-tiered Rajagopuram at the entrance. The granite hill behind the temple is 1050 feet (320 meters) and has the shrine of Kasi Viswanatha at the top. The image of Vinayaka in the temple holds sugarcane and fruits; the inner rock-cut image is made from a single stone.

The kambathadi mandapam, Ardha mandapam, and Maha mandapam—the three halls leading to the sanctum—are situated at varying elevations. The main shrine is an early rockcut temple that has cells that house the sanctums of Murugan, Durga, Vinayaka, Shiva, and Vishnu. All the statues are carved on the wall of the Parankundram rock.

A notable feature of this temple is that the shiva and vishnu face each other in the main shrine, which is considered a rare thing in ancient Hindu temples. There are five sacred water bodies here, namely Saravana Poigai, Lakshmi Theertham, Saniyasi Kinaru, Kasi Sunai, and Sathiya Koopam.

Koodal Azhagar Temple

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the Koodal Azhagar Temple, located in the center of Madurai city, is a unique and famous temple of historical significance constructed in the dravidian style of architecture and supposedly built by the pandyas.
This temple is one of the 108Divya Desams, which covers an area of 2.5 acres and has a five-tiered gopuram raising to a height of 125 feet (38 meters). The temple is enclosed in a rectangular enclosure with huge granite walls. The center shrine has an elevated structure and houses of the image of the presiding deity'Koodal Azhagar', in three forms: sitting, standing, and reclining postures.

Gandhi Memorial Museum

The present Gandhi Memorial Museum of Madurai is a historical building that used to be the palace of Rani Mangammal. It was built around 1670 AD. Spread over an area of 13 acres, this palace presents an example of architectural fineness that allures every visitor.
The Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai was established in 1959 as a tribute to the efforts of our father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi. It is one of the five great Gandhi museums in the country and depicts the life of the Father of the Nation and India's freedom struggle from 1757 until 1947. This museum comes under the Peace Museums Worldwide program selected by the United Nations Organization.

The galleries of the museum display the chronicles of the pre-independent nation during an era when unfortunate atrocities were committed by the British. Special collections include historical stamps of British-ruled India and letters to and by Mahatma Gandhi. The letters sent to the poet, activist Subramania Bharathi, and infamous dictator Adolf Hitler are kept here. The most exciting part of the museum is the section containing 124 rare photographs of Gandhiji's personal life. It has photographs depicting various stages from his childhood days until being taken to the crematorium. A bloodstained cloth used by him on the day of his assassination is also kept at this museum. The museum is also home to around 100 relics and replicas of artifacts about Gandhiji.

Mariamman Teppakulam

Mariamman Teppakulam is a beautiful square tank spread over a huge area of almost 16 acres, located about 4 kilometers east of Meenakshi Temple in Madurai city.

Connected to the Vaigai River with a system of underground channels and 12 long granite steps on all four sides. In the middle of the tank, there is a mandapam known as Maiya Mandapam, along with a garden and a Vinayakar temple. The tank is the scene of the colorful float festival held in January and February to celebrate the birth anniversary of King Thirumalai Nayak, who built this tank. The deities of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar are placed in a float called "Teppam",decorated with flowers and illuminated with hundreds of lights. This float is taken around to the tank with the sound of traditional music.

Samanar hills

Samanar Hills, or Samanar Malai, is a hill complex. Located in Keelakuyilkudi village, 15 kilometers from Madurai This archeological treasure lies on the opposite side of Nagamalai Hill and is home to pre historic caves and carvings dating back to around 1 A.D., where Tamil Jain monks lived. Several Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions, stone beds, and sculptures found here demonstrate the strong influence of Jainism on ancient Tamil society. Settipodavu and Pechipallam are the two famous figurines that the hill exhibits. It shows images of Tiruthankaras created by jain monks. Various sculptures of Mahavira, Bahubali, Gomateshwara, Yaksha, and Yakshi with Brahmi inscriptions can be seen at the entrance of the cave and at different points in the vicinity of the cave.
Archaeologists have also found evidence of the existence of a Jain school. Considering the vast depths of knowledge that these historical artifacts symbolize, On the top of the hillock, there are naturally formed rocks that resemble the shape of a crocodile. An enduring fountain can also be spotted on top of the hillock that flows strangely, without any source.

Vaigai dam

Vaigai Dam, a magnificent human-made structure, is constructed over the River Vaigai. It is situated about 68 kilometers from Madurai city. The 111-feet-tall dam has a storage capacity of 6.143mcft.
A beautiful garden, called Little Bridavan, on the side of the dam offers you the perfect spot to relax. There is also a play area for children. The scenic hills on either side of the dam, the river, and the garden make the place an ideal place for a one-day picnic with your family.
