Mattupetty Dam, near Munnar, is a storage concrete gravity dam built in the mountains of Kerala to conserve water for hydroelectricity. A walk along this concrete gravity dam leads to the lake, which is the highlight of the place. This serene lake attracts a number of animals and birds, making it a heaven for tourists.
One can indulge in activities like boating and enjoy the pristine beauty of nature around you. You can choose to cruise along the lake in a speedboat. The surrounding shola forests offer trekking options to adventure enthusiasts. Around 3km from Mattupetty is the dairy farm run by the Indo-Swiss Livestock Project. This exclusive farm has several varieties of high-yielding cattle that are reared here.
The KDHP Tea Museum is an industry and history museum situated in Munnar. The Tea Museum has a huge collection of photographs of people who have worked in tea factories in the area. The photographs show what kinds of machinery were used to produce tea in earlier times.
Photos of machinery of the current time are also shown here, unlike in the past. This museum shows due honor and recognition to the tea workers for their contribution to tea production.
At the entrance of the museum, you will find Sundial, which was a work of the Art Industrial School of Tamil Nadu. It is unbelievable that in the tea museum there is a rudimentary tea roller from 1905. It is called the'Rotorvane'.
Moreover, there is also the pelton wheel. In the 1920's, the wheel was used to supply power to the Kannimally estate.
A rail engine wheel that is used in the Kundale Valley Light Railway line can be seen. This wheel transported material and workers between the top station of Munnar.
There is a separate section for antiques in the museum. The collection is an invaluable treasure. This museum highlights some very interesting facts and figures about the growth and development of tea plantations in Munnar.
The Pothamedu Viewpoint is set amidst tea and coffee plantations and undulating hills. The vantage point offers a panoramic view of Munnar and adjoining valleys. It is a popular spot among trekkers, hikers, and nature lovers for its pleasing scenic environs. If the atmosphere is clear, one can catch a glimpse of the Muthira Puzha River and the Idukki Arch Dam. Which is around 60km away from Munnar.
One of the most beautiful spots in Munnar The top station is situated at an altitude of 1,700 m above sea level. Top Station has some of the highest tea estates in India. It is an idyllic spot with panoramic views over the Tamil Nadu plains and the edge of the majestic western ghats. This area is popular for the rare Neelakurinji flowers. The Kurinji Mala Sanctuary is nearby. Top station is the western entrance to the planned Palani Hills National Park.
