Periyar National Park, also known as Periyar Tiger Reserve, is in the mountainous western ghats. It surrounds a picturesque lake and is home to several species, including the tiger, elephant, gaur, wild pig, sambardeer, barking deer, mouse deer, and dole, or Indian wild dog. Periyar National Park is spread over 925 square kilometers. Most of the park has thickly wooded rolling hills that become quite steep in certain sections. The Periyar Lake site is at the center of the wildlife sanctuary, spanning an area of 26 square kilometers.
