Ramanatha Swamy Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva located on Rameswaram Island. It is also one of the 12 Jyotir Linga Temples. The temple was expanded during the 12th century by pandya dynasty. It is considered a holy pilgrimage site for Shaivites, Vaishnavites, and Smarthas. It is famous for its 4000-pillared corridor, which is believed to be the longest of its kind in the whole world. The presiding deity, the lingam of Ramanathaswamy, was established and worshiped by Rama before crossing his bridge to Lanka. There are 64 holy temple tanks inside the temple and also around Rameswaram Island. It is considered as a ritual to bath in these"Thirthas" before entering the temple. 22 of these holy tanks are on the temple premises of Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple.
The southernmost tip of Rameswaram Island is called Dhanuskodi. It was completely washed away by a cyclone in 1964.
But the Kothanda Ramasamy Temple here remains intact. It is 18 kilometers away from Rameswaram. A popular belief is that it is where Vibishana, a brother of Ravana, surrendered before Rama. Dhanuskodi has a fine beach, where sea surfing is possible.
The 2.2-kilometer-long bridge connecting Rameswaram Island and the mainland is the longest bridge in India, constructed over a bay. It is called the Pamban Bridge, similarly to the railway scissors bridge connecting the island, which is noted for its unique opening to pass the ships through the sea.
As India's first sea bridge. It has also become a tourist attraction by itself, as people watch in awe when the two leaves of the bridge open up to let ships pass through.
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, better known as A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, was the 11th president of India. Kalam, born and brought up in Rameswaram, became a scientist and worked for DRDO and ISRO. After his sudden demise at Shillong on July 27, 2015, he was laid to rest in Peikarumabu, Rameswaram, on July 30, 2015.
A memorial has been built at the burial site. Inside the memorial, one can see the selected photos, paintings, miniature models of missiles, etc. The memorial is less than 1km from Rameswaram.
